San Simeon, California

The oddest thing happens when you drive up the Pacific Coast Highway somewhere between Santa Barbara and Big Sur – you pass a vast field that is home to Zebras. The story goes that after media mogul William Randolph Hearst built his famous Hearst Castle, he wanted some non-native wildlife to roam the hills of his kingdom to dazzle visitors, so he got some Zebras. Their lineage has been preserved and their lines have long outlived Hearst, and so today, visitors can still see these African animals roaming the fields of Heart Castle in San Simeon.

I’ve drive by a dozen times or more, but really only got lucky this one time. Just as the sun was setting a heard was out grazing and amongst them was a juvenile unmistakably with its mother, making this place in California even more memorable for me.
